This striking mid-century oil painting captures the essence of the bulldog with remarkable character and presence. Seated on a lawn, he exudes a sense of sturdy confidence, his powerful frame and distinctive wrinkled features rendered with careful attention to form and texture. The artist conveys the dog’s characteristic jowls, muscular build, and watchful expression, as he guards a well-chewed bone.

The background, painted with palette knife, contrasts with the finely detailed bulldog, which has been executed with a paintbrush. The foliage beyond is loosely defined, allowing the subject to dominate the composition, while the white upper section of the canvas gives a sense of openness and balance.

The artist’s distinct monogram, visible in the lower right corner, suggests a professional hand, but has been difficult to ascertain.

British School, 19th Century

Two mischievous puppies

oil on canvas

6 x 10 in. (15.3 x 25.4 cm.)

frame 10 ½  x 14 ⅝  in.

This charming 19th-century oil painting of two puppies depicts one inquisitively standing whilst the other appears to be chewing on something - perhaps the carpet. Although the artist remains unidentified, their skill is evident in the rich handling of fur, expressive faces, warm, atmospheric lighting, all drawn together by the strength of the composition. The dark background enhances the soft textures of the puppies' coats, creating depth and intimacy, while the work aligns with the Victorian fascination with animal portraiture, reflecting both sentimentality and fine observational detail.
